“You need to conquer yourself before you can restore your country.” I spent my rent money travelling to London to photograph the Tommy Robinson “Unite the Kingdom” rally. What I found was not really “far-right extremism”. Nor was it heroic nationalism. It was something sadder: a people sensing decline, but struggling to respond coherently to it. Photo essay now live:

Martin Geddes: I avoid @Tesco now because…

I avoid @Tesco now because I value my privacy, don’t want a Clubcard, and the overcharging for refusing to participate has become absurd. Might as well go to M&S (15 min drive) and get better quality without the data extortion, or my nearby Aldi and keep it simple and local.

On my way to London to photograph today’s Unite the Kingdom rally. I don’t necessarily agree with everything said, but I feel it should be sayable. I also see merit in the “far-left” Nakba 78 “rival” event having their opportunity to demonstrate. World is complex. Ideas are fine.

Every time the state levies an environmental charge on you, a property tax, or a fine, then the money has to come from post-tax income. This effectively multiplies the “take”; replacing the lost cash means working yet more for the taxman at the highest marginal rate.
