Britain is running a £100 billion deficit. Even now, after everything, the Tories have one trick. And it’s been the same since the early 1980s: deficit funded tax cuts.Aaron Bastani: Britain is running a £100 billion...
Britain is running a £100 billion deficit. Even now, after everything, the Tories have one trick. And it’s been the same since the early 1980s: deficit funded tax cuts.Aaron Bastani: Zack Polanski is far from the favourite...
Zack Polanski is far from the favourite in Holborn and St Pancras. And Camden Labour is still very much an effective political machine. His best hope to cause an upset is: 1) Focus relentlessly on this Summer’s drought and heat. Say you will be a leading voice as we hit new record highs next year with El Niño. Say you will pressure Burnham to nationalise Thames Water. Even solid Labour voters are open to this argument, particularly when it’s a Labour-Green 1-2 anyway. Talk about how climate breakdown is particularly an issue in cities (heat island effect). 2) Focus on foreign policy, from Washington to Gaza. Again, Labour voters are open to the idea of the Greens putting pressure on the government with issues they care about. Even when they like Burnham. This can be presented as a corrective of national importance (which is true). Stake out the position historically made by the now decimated Labour left. This isn’t ’anti-Americanism’, it’s about Britain being a sovereign, self-governing country. Which the political establishment doesn’t really believe in. Why are US bases IN BRITAIN using dollars? (Answer: because we don’t get a say). 3) Tell voters they will have an advocate with a much larger national megaphone, given Polanski also leads a national party, than with Labour. “I will not only sort your casework, I can also make it national news” is a great sell. 4) Relentlessly say you want to push Burnham left, and put climate change at the heart of the national political agenda. After all, Starmer only went because the Greens already prevailed in one by-election this year. Imagine what another could do? This doesn’t need to mean attacking Burnham personally: yes, his record is mixed to bad (Iraq!) but his personal approval ratings speak for themselves right now. Rather, Polanski as an MP means keeping Burnham honest. People aren’t in the mood for rancour as Labour makes progress in taking on Reform. Do all that and I think they’re competitive. Like I say, though, Camden Labour has a ton of data and a powerful machine.Aaron Bastani: Wise for @ZackPolanski to stand...
Wise for @ZackPolanski to stand in Holborn & St Pancras. Greens didn’t clean up in relevant wards in May so Lab favourites. But he has a chance. Worst case: ZP is competitive & starts to build data operation for seat in Hackney. Plus Greens are nationally visible. No brainer.Aaron Bastani: Economism is such an issue...
Economism is such an issue with the British left historically - & part of the reason for its political failures. Housing is a huge issue, certainly, but so are things like anti-social behaviour & high streets (less so, of course). And climate! Denying things like that might feel comforting, but it doesn’t make it less true. Mao, speaking about the mass line, is very good on this. From the people to the people.Aaron Bastani: British politics over the last 20 years...
British politics over the last 20 years is basically self-declared ‘egg heads’, who talk about Pareto optimality & marginal utility, but who designed the dumbest systems possible. Scrap the 100k ‘cliff edge’, scrap interest on student loans - and rebuild a broad middle class.Aaron Bastani: Andy Burnham says he wants to stop this...
Andy Burnham says he wants to stop this. That's fantastic. 1001 other things the country needs to get to grips with, but it's a positive step - and relatively easy. It does beg the question. What the hell was Keir Starmer doing for two years?Aaron Bastani: Labour inherited a mess...
Labour inherited a mess, certainly. But we’re meant to believe AFC Bournemouth can build corner infills for their stadium over the summer break, and into the start of the season, but the British state can’t build robust, temporary prison capacity in…two years?Aaron Bastani: It’s not left wing to give psychotic...
It’s not left wing to give psychotic misanthropes a free pass. Save the trees, keep kids parks safe, and punish the herberts that do this nonsense. That’s not ‘socially conservative’ - it’s the minimal foundation for any kind of pleasant public realm.Aaron Bastani: 72 dead so far...
72 dead so far, among those who reached Ceuta. The more you read, the more it seems like the geopolitical version of a teenage flash mob, with Moroccan authorities happy to not do anything to stop it.Aaron Bastani: Greens are still doing politics as if Burnham...
Greens are still doing politics as if Burnham wasn’t PM, and their job was stopping Reform. But Labour is coming for your votes! Perfectly reasonable to focus relentlessly on two things: climate change and classic green issues, and foreign policy. Burnham v vulnerable on both.Aaron Bastani: Seen some extraordinary wishcasting...
Seen some extraordinary wishcasting in last few days saying reform is over (and no, it’s not joking with the Tucker Carlson meme). As long as migration is a top 2 issue that simply isn’t happening (even if they aren’t the largest party at next GE).Aaron Bastani: Iranian sailor killed by Ukraine in Caspian...
Iranian sailor killed by Ukraine in Caspian, and Iraqi govt claims Ukraine involved in terrorist activities within its borders (unconfirmed). Looks like US and Israeli have a useful new outlet to fight proxy war.Aaron Bastani: England should play with Bellingham...
England should play with Bellingham as a false 9 in a post Kane world. Phenomenal. So confident about his ability. Chalobah on his arse for that final France goal 🤣 - how on earth is Harry Maguire not there?Aaron Bastani: It’s extraordinary...
It’s extraordinary if this many senior Labour figures still don’t get this. You will all lose your seats!Aaron Bastani: 12% possession between England scoring...
12% possession between England scoring and Argentina equalising. @HMRCgovuk I’d like to highlight a serious case of fraud: this man is on £5 million a year!Aaron Bastani: If they are briefing like this...
If they are briefing like this, this early, it won’t last a year. This stuff is compulsive for Labour MPs, it’s like some sort of collective mental illness - and completely at odds with socialist, collective politics.Aaron Bastani: Crazy. 4 huge games since 2018...
Crazy. 4 huge games since 2018, 2 finals and 2 semi-finals. In each one England started playing anti-football with 30 minutes left. 4 times! You can do that against Raul Jimenez - not Messi!Aaron Bastani: Hunt for white male suspect...
“Hunt for white male suspect over Ann Widdecombe 'murder' after she was found 'covered in blood from head wound' at Devon home” This is horrendous.Aaron Bastani: 13% oppose a wealth tax...
13% oppose a wealth tax. The best thing that happened to the left in recent years was Musk buying X and removing our reality distortion field. Now the right has that problem.Aaron Bastani: Increase defence spending while cutting...
Increase defence spending while cutting basic things: trading standards (as organised crime runs rampant on high street); British transport police (as 40% of rail workers say they’ve seen a weapon in last year). Child protection, probation, education. We are living beyond means. But generally not for reasons political class and media say.Aaron Bastani: The rapid collapse of the Starmer regime...
The rapid collapse of the Starmer regime - inside two years - really blindsided the establishment centrist parts of the media, not least the BBC. Interesting how they are trying to finesse his departure.Aaron Bastani: A quite extraordinary development...
A quite extraordinary development in @andyburnham’s Labour Party. I’m told John Stolliday, whose deplorable behaviour we exposed in the Labour Leaks, has just been announced as Labour’s executive director of GLU (responsible for legal and governance).Aaron Bastani: One reason Labour has given disgraced bureaucrat...
One reason Labour has given disgraced bureaucrat, John Stolliday, a job, is the Labour right lost unison - where he worked - so he needed a job. After law changes for 2027: a job for life. This is how Labour right work. They couldn’t run a sweet shop, let alone the country!Aaron Bastani: Since Brexit...
“Since Brexit, the UK no longer has a data-sharing agreement with many countries in the EU, making it more difficult to check criminal and immigration records of asylum seekers”. Nobody who led the Brexit campaign will accept a modicum of responsibility.Aaron Bastani: Actually, we need more national...
Actually, we need more national leaders who’ve done things in and for the UK, rather than LARPing on the world stage. These people STILL don’t get British politics after Brexit.Aaron Bastani: There are many insane things about...
There are many insane things about Starmer's local govt reforms. But perhaps the best is a *mayor* for the whole of Suffolk and Norfolk (9,200 sq kilometres). That's the size of Cyprus, and about 6 times bigger than GREATER LONDON. A 'mayor'. 🤣Aaron Bastani: Burnham will know better than anyone...
Burnham will know better than anyone that he won in Makerfield in spite of the likes of Streeting, Darren Jones and managerial blairism. Their political offer went down like 💩 over two years. Genuinely intrigued to see if Labour will do the cliched ‘broad tent’ including them.Aaron Bastani: Starmer isn’t a ‘decent man’...
Starmer isn’t a ‘decent man’. He’s a nasty liar who has the temerity to now say his greatest achievement in office was scrapping the two child benefit cap, something he removed the whip from his MPs over! He’s comically dishonourable and malevolent.Aaron Bastani: As the media assesses demise of...
As the media assesses demise of Starmer virtually nothing is being said about the moment it was really over: Green victory in Gorton & Denton. That showed he was haemorrhaging party’s core vote (McSweeney’s claim being they had nowhere else to go) & Lab set for below 100 seats >Aaron Bastani: A lot of it is attributable to...
A lot of it is attributable to ‘ignore the noise’ strategy from Morgan McSweeney. The noise was, in fact, Starmer alienating every part of his coalition (except younger parents with new kids). They were quoting Nate Silver & Steve Jobs while sending the party to 50 seats. Mad!Aaron Bastani: At this point Starmer has either...
At this point Starmer has either gone mad or is a Reform deep sleeper agent. Also, Burnham just won a by-election in a constituency where Labour were smashed 6 weeks ago!Aaron Bastani: Reform and the Greens change...
Reform and the Greens change everything in our system. It’ll probably break FPTP. It’s a system designed to stop outsiders highlighting the distance between the rhetoric and reality of two major parties.Read more
