Ben Judah: I think the demographic transformation...
I think the demographic transformation of London is definitely part of this drop off but it’s not the only explanation.
The Left suffers analytically from downplaying demographic change whilst the Right suffers analytically from trying to make it the explanation for everything and this is a good case study. It’s not the main driver — which is Brexit and post-2016 politics.
In the 2011 census we already have in this constituency a White British population at 42% and an Asian and Black population of just shy of 20% and 10% respectively. The demographics were close to what they are now with 42% to now 44% born abroad.
But the Right was able to get 26% of the vote.Part of the explanation is that as the seat became less White British, it became more prosperous and middle class. The share of professional, managerial and associate professional jobs rose from 44% in 1991 to 65% in 2021.
Therefore I don’t think you can ascribe the collapse of the Right’s vote share since to 15% in 2026 purely to ethnic change. It plays a part for sure but the main issue driving this drop off is Brexit and the culture war post 2016.
A chunk of prosperous upper middle class voters stopped seeing the Right as the protectors of their economic interests and values with these political choices. This isn’t particularly mysterious. This was in fact celebrated by the Right as it trumpeted its enmity to Islington Remainers.
