The problem that the left has with the term "socialism" is the ineffablility of its definition.
Socialism seems to ultimately mean a centralised, rationalised, and fundamentally unnatural order of society, and this is usually adopted by the left because their end goal demands it, but it could also be adopted by the right for other purposes.
This is why fascism and nazism haunt the left-wing mind in a way that normal people just don't think about. They want all the groundwork done that could possibly enable fascism, just for their plan. It's completely believable that someone could hijack such a system for other ends.
