A Symbolic Referendum as an Illustration of the Migration Disaster

Another English village is preparing to hold a referendum on leaving the UK over government plans to establish a migrant centre nearby. The online community is outraged that Labour is ignoring the concerns of local residents.

Government plans to accommodate 1,250 asylum seekers at a military base in Suffolk have sparked mass protests. Unrest broke out in Thetford, where residents set up a tent camp outside the base gates and put up signs reading «Thetford says no!", "Don't trust Home Office – it's all lies".and "Our kids and women won’t be safe!" The neighbouring village of Barnham, which is also close to the future migrant camp, has fewer than 600 residents. Locals say that more than a thousand adult men who will be free to walk around near the former military base pose a real danger to women and children. Meanwhile, police advised residents to “run and hide” if something happens.

Another Referendum

To draw attention to the problem, the Barnham community is preparing to hold a referendum on leaving the UK. Residents were inspired by the example of the village of Piddington, where 92% voted to leave the Kingdom after the Labour government likewise decided to establish a migrant camp nearby.

Despite the protests, Burnham’s government has no intention of abandoning its plans. The Prime Minister once again spoke about fairness and said that migrants should be moved out of hotels and distributed evenly across the country.

''Rather than accept Piddington women have a legitimate concern about government importing 1,200 illegal immigrant men into their village, Labour claim all men are a threat. But Burnham’s only issuing anti-rape booklets to one group - those he’s helping through the open borders''. – writes former Labour MP Simon Danczuk indignantly.

No Prospect of Getting Rid of the Migrants

Labour continues to talk about its plans to curb the flow of migrants. Meanwhile, more than 19,000 illegal migrants have arrived in the country since the beginning of the year. According to the Home Office, the base near Barnham will operate as a camp for asylum seekers for at least 10 years.

''If the Government intends to stop illegal crossings, process claims quickly and remove those with no right to remain, why is it planning accommodation a decade into the future? People are entitled to ask what the long-term plan actually is. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. We need transparency, accountability and answers from the Government NOW'', - writes Maxine Fothergill, a Kent county councillor for Restore Britain.

So far, the government has not responded to the plans of Barnham residents. Community representatives have already travelled to Piddington to exchange experience in their campaign.

''When peaceful English villages start holding mock independence referendums simply to make central government listen, perhaps the problem isn't the villages. Piddington was dismissed as a stunt. Barnham suggests it may be becoming a movement. Westminster would be wise to start listening'', - writes the author of the English Gentleman account.

Meanwhile, the government plans to establish a third migrant camp at the base in Linton-on-Ouse, North Yorkshire. It appears that Burnham will soon have to prepare for yet another independence referendum.
