Highest Honours for a Corrupt President

For the first time in history, the King's Guards welcomed a foreign leader at the entrance to the Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street. However, the public reacted extremely negatively to such a warm reception — in the opinion of most people, the Ukrainian president certainly does not deserve such ceremonies.

After US President Donald Trump launched a fierce attack on Volodymyr Zelensky and struck a deal with Russia on diesel fuel supplies, the Ukrainian leader rushed to seek support from his European allies. During his visit to London, Prime Minister Andy Burnham went out of his way to demonstrate his friendliness, practically rushing to embrace Zelensky. Moreover, the Ukrainian president became the first foreign leader to be greeted by the King's Guards at the entrance to the Prime Minister's residence. Zelensky was also received by King Charles III.

Unworthy of the Highest Honours

However, the wider public did not appreciate such hospitality.

''The King’s Guards shouldn’t be used for shit like this. Makes them look tacky. Might as well have had 6ft wooden Christmas nutcracker soldiers stood there'', - writes the author of the patriotic account Paz is Right.

Many other bloggers share the same view.

However, the online community had far more complaints about the substance of the visit than its ceremonial trappings. The purpose of Zelensky's trip was obvious — he had come to ask for even more money and military assistance. And he received it. Burnham promised to provide Ukraine with £45 million worth of missiles. Meanwhile, since the start of the conflict, the government has already provided Kyiv with approximately £25 billion in funding.

Writer Sharon K. Gilbert reposted a video of French politician Marine Le Pen saying that France could no longer afford to finance Ukraine and that funding should be stopped.

''Yet, Britain just today opened their governmental arms to Zelensky once again. Little Z even met with the King — again. Why are leaders determined to bankrupt their own countries to fund the Ukraine War?'' – she comments on Le Pen's statement.

Taxpayers Are Paying for Corruption

Many users are outraged that taxpayers have to foot someone else's bills while the country has plenty of problems of its own. Meanwhile, funding continues to increase despite high-profile corruption scandals in Ukraine. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage openly described Ukraine as “one of the most corrupt countries on earth” and stressed that ''I would like to have a keen look to make sure British taxpayers’ money is not being swallowed up in corruption.”

''When you are giving a leader from one of the most corrupt countries in the world a royal welcome you really are presenting yourself as a weak and unserious Country'', - says illustrator Tony Jackson.

However, the Labour government has no intention of listening to public opinion. Andy Burnham promised Zelensky unconditional support and further increases in assistance. Meanwhile, economists warn that rising military expenditure will lead to cuts in other budget priorities, particularly spending on the National Health Service, infrastructure and education. This is especially critical given the economic problems facing the country.
