Labour Is Destroying the Nation’s Mental Health

In April, the number of people receiving Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) because of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) exceeded 100,000 for the first time. At the time, 82,000 soldiers were serving as regular personnel in the British Army. As The Telegraph points out, since the Labour Party came to power in July 2024, spending on benefits has increased by almost £20bn.

It Pays to Be Mentally Ill

Over the past three years, the number of people claiming payments because of ADHD has almost doubled. PIP recipients receive up to £9,747 a year and can spend the money on anything they want. Unsurprisingly, social media has seen the emergence of numerous so-called ''sickfluencers'', who give advice on how to obtain benefits.

According to the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey (APMS), between 2014 and 2024, the proportion of England’s population with common mental disorders rose from 18.9% to 22.6%. Young people aged 16–24 were affected the most. Waiting lists for ADHD assessments among children and young people grew from around 21,000 in 2019 to almost 270,000 by the end of 2025.

Even countries at war have better statistics. But there is no war in the United Kingdom. Experts cite financial instability and the rising cost of living, especially housing, insecure employment and difficulties finding work among young people, as well as a range of other socio-economic factors, among the main reasons for the rise in such disorders.

The Government Does Not Need Healthy People

As many commentators point out, the Labour government has no intention of addressing the causes of the problem and is merely increasing welfare payments at the expense of working taxpayers.

It follows that a mentally unhealthy population is more advantageous to the ruling party than a nation with sound mental health. After all, benefit recipients with ADHD are much easier to manipulate.
