Residents of the Capital Have Lost Confidence in the Mayor

The results of the latest YouGov poll have dealt a serious blow to Sadiq Khan — more than half of Londoners believe he should step down. Many social media users share the respondents’ view.

According to the new poll, 56% of London residents do not want Sadiq Khan to stand in the 2028 election. Moreover, they believe he should leave office early. Overall, 48% of respondents have a negative view of the mayor, while his net approval rating stands at minus 9. In addition, 47% of respondents believe that Sir Sadiq Khan is doing a poor job. The mayor is viewed most negatively by residents of London’s outer boroughs, where older people make up a larger share of the population. There, 51% of respondents rate his performance negatively.

Problems with housing, crime and migrants

There are specific reasons behind this discontent. Over Sadiq Khan’s three terms in office, housing affordability in the capital has only worsened. Some 66% of Londoners believe he is doing a poor job of meeting even the reduced targets in this area. Under the city’s 2021–2026 programme, 14,355 affordable homes were delivered instead of the planned 19,000. Meanwhile, annual demand stands at 45,500 homes. More than 340,000 families are currently waiting for social housing across London.

Another major source of dissatisfaction is the steadily growing number of migrants on the streets and the level of crime. Numerous videos are being posted on social media showing London increasingly resembling the capital of a third-world country.

Some 57% of respondents believe Sadiq Khan is doing a poor job of tackling crime.

''This is Labour City Hall in one chart: virtue schemes and press-release policing, while phone theft and disorder became everyday weather. That’s the product. If the capital feels less safe and less liveable, the man who ran it doesn’t deserve another term and doesn’t deserve to be Mayor of London'', - the author of the NRAW account comments on the poll results.

This view is also supported by official police statistics. The number of thefts and robberies per 1,000 people in London is 4.5 times higher than the national average. Over the past three years, there has been a surge in virtually every category of crime.

Life Has Gotten Worse

Some 55% of respondents say that during Sir Sadiq Khan’s 10 years in office, London has only become a worse place to live. However, the Labour Party itself does not appear to share voters’ opinion. Last year, the Mayor of London received a knighthood and is now seeking a seat in the House of Lords. This is despite one petition opposing such a decision having collected 220,000 signatures.

Some 31% of respondents regret their decision to vote for Sadiq Khan in the 2024 election. The mayor himself, however, appears to regret nothing. And Londoners still have almost two years to endure before the next election.

A Somali-Born Driver Struck Five Pedestrians in London
